A shield useful for sparring. It does not block any piercing damage, making it a poor choice for real combat situations.

Sparring equipment is not only used by warriors. Bored nobles often hire combat instructors as a pastime. Some of the nobility does get quite proficient with weapons over time. Most use the training to spice up their evening conversation.
