    Background

Valerius grew up in a household which, while not massive, gave him and his two older sisters, who are twins, more than enough room. The house could be called neither rural nor urban - it was located right between the countryside and the town. The building served not only as a house, but also as a clinic which Valerius’ father worked in - when his parents had just married, his father did not have much success, but quickly gained a reputation and became the go-to local doctor for the town’s inhabitants, giving the family a stable income. He greatly enjoyed his childhood with two loving parents and two great friends, whom he met at his school, where Valerius excelled.

On his 8th birthday, his father bought him to his uncle, who ran a blacksmith. The process bored him, but as he poked around, he noticed a spear with a strong, chestnut handle and two silver coloured spears at either end. His uncle showed him the usage of molten steel to create the spearheads, and the fire brought to his mind the idea it was made by the dragons whom he had always heard of in mythical tales. And so the name sprung to his mind almost immediately, and called the weapon Drago. He spent the rest of the day begging his father and uncle for it, and in the end as a birthday surprise, they decided to give it to him. He spent the next few months training everyday, and whilst over the years he began to use it on a less frequent basis, Valerius always kept Drago next to him.

The House of Oratheon prays to the God Metus, who Valerius greatly respects as the patron of the harvest, however he also developed an appreciation for Marventa due to her explorative nature. Although he was intelligent and successful in school, Valerius was never the most extroverted person - as he got older, he struggled making new friends so kept close to the two friends he made at a young age. He enjoyed keeping himself to himself, and discovered a love for the companionship of animals which he had never found with humans - in fact, as he got older and began to admire animals more and more, he lost his appetite for meat completely - a choice which was very unusual in 25th Century Patraeia.

Meanwhile, his sisters had begun to study the subject of medicine, and dreamed of inheriting their father’s business for them self; however, they knew that being the only son the business would go to Valerius, and simply accepted they would have no say in the matter. From a young age, Valerius also just assumed he would take over his father’s business as a doctor, and until his teenage years, he didn’t think much of this. At that stage, having studied an array of subjects in school, he realised he had no interest in healing people - his passions lay elsewhere, yet he didn’t no where. In one way, he was eager to explore the world and see what it had to offer; on the other hand, he wanted to discover foreign languages spoken in distant lands; and in another sense, he wanted to become a baker, living a peaceful and simple life with his dogs. And so, when Valerius heard a ship was sailing to settle the city of Elpida, he knew this was what he had to do. Upon telling his family of his departure, initially there was a sense of shock and sadness, but quickly his parents understood that it was the choice that made sense - their son would get to follow his true passions, and their daughters would get what they always aspired to have. As a result, the day of departure was melancholic, however Valerius’ promise to return regularly made it a lot easier.

As the ship sailed away and Valerius waved goodbye to his family and friends, the sadness was matched equally by a sense of motivation and excitement for what was to come - he could pursue the study of a language, he could set up a bakery, or he could even lay out a career in politics. What he would become, he did not know, but as land dawned in the horizon, Valerius knew one thing - he would find his destiny in Elpida.
