His parents were odd people; funny yet strange - entirely encapsulated by their passion for alchemy. Nico too fell in love with the art of alchemy, and was drawn to the craft, but his parents refused to let him participate in the practical work, claiming it was too dangerous for a young boy like him. Instead, Nico was only permitted to do the boring household chores, and soon his life became monotonous and boring - he began to resent his parents for denying him his passion - a passion which they so clearly shared. He began yearning for some more interesting ways to spend his free time, so he made contact with a distant uncle who travelled around the country practising politics. Nico began to spend every second he was spared with this uncle, he was fascinated by his rousing speeches and his educated views - the power in which he held and directed himself appealed so directly to the young boy, who had grown accustomed to his seemingly increasingly dull and tedious parents. Over the years, his parents noticed their son growing distant, and so on his 11th birthday, they finally gave him a pair of safety goggles - allowing him to take part in the practical work that he had loved in his childhood. After so many days of filling his hours with chores, and spending his fleeting time with his uncle, he fell in love with the art of alchemy again. He grew distant with his uncle, and eventually lost contact with him - focusing all of his time on catching up on the alchemy he had missed. His parents were overjoyed with the prospect of properly connecting with their son, and so they build a small alchemy workbench in their basement, teaching him all they knew about the craft. Over the following years he developed and refined his skill, making a complete set of notes on every lesson he was taught. One day, after he had been travelling to collect some rare herbs for the latest alchemy session, he returned home to find his house burnt to the ground. His entire life had been reduced to smouldering ashes and rubble. Weeping in anguish, Nico searched the burning ashes for any sign of his parents, and he eventually found their corpses buried under the charred planks of wood. He asked everybody who spoke to his parents if they knew what had happened, and he gathered that some kind of experiment had gone wrong, an experiment he was never told about. He had overhead snippets of conversation, whispers through a crack in the door, secretive glances and knowing smiles that his parents had been working on something huge, but now he would never know. Occasionally he would ask them, but they would only laugh it off, and reply "It's better if you don't know". Oh how he wished he hadn't taken that for an answer, oh how he wished he had pressed them relentlessly until they had revealed the big secret. But he didn't, and there would be no way to ever find out. Still, he used this burning curiosity to fuel his desire to continue their legacy, and he picked himself up, vowing to continue the work that they had been so passionate about. Within the smoking ruins of what once was his house, he found his notes, his parents life savings and his trusty pair of goggles, but people had begun to grow suspicious - alchemy had always been a delicate issue for the more religious people in the neighbourhood. He knew he couldn't stay around the other prying citizens, he knew he had to leave and start anew somewhere else. With a grim nod of determination, he turned away from the ruins of his house and he boarded the first ship to Elpida.
