So whilst sitting around listening to a podcast (The Co-Optional Podcast if anyone is curious! ). I got an idea for a new proffession/job! Now looking through the forums I haven't found much on this so I figured I'd speak my mind on it. Alright so i'll get right to the point: Stonemason. Now I know what you may be thinking, "Why on earth would we need that? We already have a blacksmith? Can't he just make the tools for us?" Now my friend, A stonemason would not be the one you'd go to tools for, no no, he would be in charge of supplying say a "Builder/Carpenter" with whatever stone they needed for a project or, if you're thinking bigger, he could also provide stone to a town so that they could build better buildings or maybe a wall to protect the town! Now thinking about it sure, a miner could do this same thing, but I think a job specified for it would be way more interesting! Instead of just having to dig stone for a few hours then giving it to the builder and he "Shapes/Magically crafts" it into bricks, that a stonemason could be similiar to the blacksmithing crafting, in that he may have to "Chisel or sculpt" the bricks into the proper shapes! Or that he would maybe have to cook them to get the right density so that they could be tougher! But hey, that's just my idea. Sure it would seem tedious and maybe it wouldn't be for some people. But again, neatly cut stones could turn a pretty penny on the mainland. After all, people need houses, as well as castles need walls. But once again, it's just my idea. Not perfect in some ways but I just think it'd seem like a cool roll to play. (Well besides a preacher but that's a whole 'nother topic). Feedback is appreciated! Hope ya'll can see what I am trying to say here!
Seems like a really good idea. Are you suggesting this for future players to choose in their bio or for us to put a stonemason in Elpida?
I was thinking in Elpida but now that you mention it I think someone being a stonemason could have a decent bio as well! I was also thinking on it some more, and with the way sandstone and stone bricks have different textures depending on crafting it just seems like a natural choice! But then again I have no idea how much code that would be so use this idea as you please!
So are you thinking it as a new way of crafting stone/sandstone blocks? What are the gameplay elements you are thinking?
@tcvs I was thinking exactly that. For example: Maybe instead of having a miner just bring stone to a builder, NPC or player however ya'll do that, that maybe he would instead bring the stone blocks to a stonemason. Then from there the stonemason would see what type of bricks a person needs. Or he could just make the bricks and sell them offshore for the "mainlanders" to use. Gameplay wise, Crafting wouldn't be too difficult; it would just be a player chiseling a stone block in the cafting table, or on the ground as a whole block. Then also if someone needed bricks that were stronger than that, perhaps the stonemason would cook them in a furnace or even maybe in a blacksmith like oven, causing them to become denser or tougher, in turn making the color of the block darker. Hopefully those were the answers you were looking for. But I just thought that this "Proffession" would play as a good middleman between say the miner and the builder. As well being a good money maker and a era friendly one at that.
That's a really good idea. We haven't thought of that. Stonemasons were very established throughout history, it would make sense to have them around. Will see what we can do. The issue gameplay-wise is that there needs to be enough items for each profession. You don't want to have a stonemason that simply produces one or two final items. There would need to be a range of possible stones, all of which would need to have some use. This might make sense when the Carpenter is in game - stonemasons could supply them with building materials.
@Tomas exactly. Depending on the updates there are the other stones that Mojang added in. But also there are those 3 different types for both Sandstone and Stone bricks! So there will be at least 6 different final items that could be made.
